speaking, the handicraft scenario in Gujarat is a scenario
consisting of textile based items viz., Artistic Weaving,
Patola Sarees, Hand Block Printing on Mulmul, Various
Embroideries on Cushion covers, Wall Hangings, Bed sheets
etc., and various other varieties from the field of
Non-Textile items, it is Wood Carving, Artistic Puppets
making, Pataras, Brass and White Metal Inlay Items,
Marquetry Boxes etc.

Gujarat
dominated the seaborne cotton trade through ages
and is still today a major producer of block prints.
The combination of printing with mordant dyeing
is typical of the technique in many parts of Gujarat.
The Ajrakh resist printing of Anjar
and Dhamadka in Kachchh is well known. The dominanat
motif is of the Mother Goddess in her many forms
and aspects. A large number of garments like salwar
suits, shirts, jackets, skirts, sarees, dupattas,
furnishing like bedcover, pillowcovers, cushion
cover, table cloths, napkins, curtains are some
of the items made with block prints.

Gujarat
is known for its embroidery in an immense variety
of styles and techniques. Here women not only
embroider their cholis and ghagras
but also items for decorating their houses,
such as chaklas, wall hangings, pillow covers,
quilts etc. There is perfect harmony and distribution
of the colouring, the colours flow into one
another. Applique ot katab is another
from of decorative needlework which women prepare
for a special uses. The rich embroidery work
of Bhuj, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Ahmedabad
districts are famous in Gujarat.
