 Introduction
Education

Today, with the world shrinking its identity to a 'global village', the industrial sector is seeking a variety of skills. The Government firmly believes that 'Quality' is the password for any company planning to strengthen its base in international market. The Government of Gujarat has thus initiated certain pro-active measures so as to be able to fulfill the future demands.

Apart from some prestigious educational institutions like Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National Institute of Design (NID), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI), Nirma Institute of Management, Center for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT);

the state is home to 28 Engineering colleges, 61 polytechnics, 26 management study institutions, 30 colleges for computer application courses as well as 219 Industrial Training Institutes and other vocational institutes.

In the coming years , education, research and development activities would be of paramount importance and with the onset of WTO regime the new adage for industries would be - "Innovate or Perish". The industries thus would be encouraged to exploit the vast reservoir of experience and knowledge of universities to gain a cutting edge in terms of 'quality' in the market getting increasingly characterised by commotidization. The Industry on their part would assist the educational institutions in developing quality infrastructure and by sensitizing the universities with their manpower requirements.

A sound education system is of quintessence when the question is of strengthening the social fabric of a region. The state of Gujarat has always believed in these principles and has encouraged setting up of quality educational institutions across the state. The industrial development in the region provides vast potential for setting of new educational institutes in the areas of Marine engineering, Port management, Gems and Jewellery design, Fishery and fish processing, Urban planning, Disaster management and Biotechnology.
