Fair |
| |
In the first week of Bhadrapad (August-September)
Tarnetar, a quite hamlet in Chotila Taluka
of Surendranagar is transformed into a
whirl of colour and excitement. The Tarnetar
fair is one of the most courful events
in the state of Gujarat. This three day
fair is held at the Temple of Shiva or
Trinetreshwar (three eyed God) popularly
known as Tarnetar.
|
The
popular belief associates the village with
the Swayamvar (marriage) of Draupadi after
Arjun performed the Mastsyavedh, an incredible
feat of archery. A time honoured ritual
that is still practised is tribal youth
gathering here to find a suitable match.
The young both men and women swing and sway
in gay abandon to the throbbing rhythm of
the Ras Garba and the Hudo Dance. The most
thrilling sight of all is the Rasada the
fascinating folk dance performed by hundreds
of women moving gracefully in a single circle
dancing gaily to the accompaniment of four
drums and jodia pava (double flutes). Another
distinctive feature of the Fair is the Tarnetar
Chhatri (Umbrella.) These umbrellas are
a delighfut treat for a connoisseur of art,
meticulously embellished with mirror work,
intricate embroidery and enchanting lacework.
Gujarat Tourism makes arrangements for guided
tours to Tarnetar from Ahmedabad.Mouth watering
Gu|arati delicacies and typical kuba Huts

Northern Hemisphere and hence the name Uttarayan.
It is celebrared all over Gujarat but the
excitement runs highest in Ahmedabad, Surat,
Nadiad and Vadodara. The clear blue sky
seems to beckon everyone, and people surrender
themselves to the joy of kite flying.

The
sky from morning to evening - remains dotted
with vivid splashes of colour, as kites
in a variety of hues, shapes and sizes dart
across the azure blue With the onest of
the night, youngsters continue their struggle
for supremacy in the sky with the paper
lanterns tied to their kites string known
as tukkal presents a lovely image at night.

| Navratri |
|
Navratri, the Festival
of nine nights, is celebrated with the performance
of Gujarat's popular folk dance, devoted
to Shakit. The participants move round in
a circle around a mandvi, a structure to
hold earthen lamps and the idol of the Mother
Goddess. In different parts of the state
the celebration of Navratri has different
emphasis. In Saurashtra, Bhavai, a dance
drama is enacted. |

|
At
Vadnagar in Mehsana Vada Garbani Sheri is
the focus of attention Another dance feature
of Navratri is the dandia-ras, in which
men and women dance in circles, holding
small polished sticks or dandias. At Vadodara,
the grace and dignity of the performances
of Vadodara leaves nothing to chance. Navratri
is worth witnessing for its pomp, splendor
and exhilaration that permeates everywhere. |
